The iconic electronic composers and producers Murcof and Jan Jelinek at St Paul's Sessions 7 in an unmissable double bill at the Ioannis Despotopoulos Amphitheatre of the Athens Conservatoire.
Born in 1970 in Mexico and a permanent resident of Barcelona since 2006, Murcof, or Fernando Corona, is one of the most significant figures in the field of electronic music over the last 25 years.
Known for his classical minimalist textures and unique soundscapes, Murcof has established himself as one of the top contemporary ambient music artists, alongside names like Tim Hecker and Alva Noto. His monumental 2002 album "Martes" remains an unparalleled minimalist masterpiece.
Since then, Murcof has released albums featuring notable collaborations, such as his double album "The Alias Sessions," which we enjoyed live at St Paul's Sessions 5 in collaboration with Spanish visual artist Sergi Palau.
Recently, he released his album "The Etna Sessions" on Facade Electronics. This new project originated from the audiovisual work "Etna, a Portrait," commissioned in 2015 by ZO (Centro Culture Contemporanee) in Catania, Sicily. It was created in collaboration with visual artist Manu Ros, under the artistic pseudonym Life Observing Life.
His latest release, "Twin Color - Vol. 1," marks Murcof's triumphant return to producing a complete solo album nearly two decades after his acclaimed 2007 album "Cosmos," with its premiere at Mutek Montréal in August 2024.
With this new album, he takes a bold step forward, adopting a strongly cinematic narrative influenced by the major sci-fi films of the 1980s. It represents a pioneering audiovisual performance created in collaboration with sound designer Simon Geilfus, who played a significant role in the album's production. This immersive new direction plunges the listener into a setting of moving natural landscapes, both mysterious and captivating, with atmospheres that shift between dark and nostalgic brightness, drawing inspiration from post-punk and synth-wave. "Twin Color (Vol. 1)" is the first volume of a special collection developed at the studios of France's IRCAM in Paris, focusing on avant-garde and electroacoustic music research.
Jan Jelinek is a German musician, producer, and remixer based in Berlin, also known under the pseudonyms Farben, Gramm, and The Exposures.
He began as a young record collector of dub, jazz, funk, and soul, later exploring house music. His music is usually categorized under minimal techno, glitch, or microhouse, characterized by deep basslines, extensive use of samples from old jazz and rock recordings, and clicks & cuts-style effects. He is also the founder of the German label Faitiche.
As Farben, he delved into soul and funk, transforming old Motown records into minimal electronica.
In 2001, he released his acclaimed album "Loop Finding Jazz Records" on the ~scape label, which, as its title suggests, was based on old jazz recordings stripped of their original context. This album is a landmark in the genre, recently reissued and consistently ranked among the greatest electronic music albums of all time by the international press.
In 2003, his album "La Nouvelle Pauvreté" reinterpreted rock, creating a fictional backing band, The Exposures. For this project, he processed samples from a wide range of artists, including Brian Ferry and Sun Ra.
In his 2005 album "Kosmischer Pitch," Jelinek returned to his roots, sampling "cosmic" sounds
