With The Future Is Dark Which Is the Best Thing a Future Can Be,
Rodia Vomvolou and Petros Konnaris meet undercurrent to explore how we imagine
the future amid the uncertainties and contradictions of the present.

The future is dark which is the best thing a future can be is a performance–board game that seeks critical ways of engaging with urgencies of contemporary reality while activating alternative speculations about the future. Every game/performance is unique and takes a different theme as its starting point, around which three players move like pawns across a floored landscape of stations of knowledge/ notions such as The Palace of Feminist Governance, The Rock of Responsibility, and The Cavern of Care, perform different scores and instructions, produce poetic manifestos, imagined narratives, critical questions, and embodied landscapes.

The future is dark which is the best thing a future can be explores the relationship between the logic of a board game, choreographic thinking, and dramaturgy, blurring the line between performing arts and everyday life and proposing a horizontal redistribution of agency and power

hierarchies. Drawing on the performativity and aesthetics of 1990s TV game shows, and the practice of live dramaturgying, the performance activates an open, vulnerable, and playful space for dialogue and reflection. The title of the work comes from a phrase in Virginia Woolf’s 1915 diary, written at the beginning of the First World War, which was later revisited in the work of writer and activist Rebecca Solnit. Here, darkness becomes a space of uncertainty and, therefore, possibility. Rather than offering ready-made answers, the work engages with practices of futuring that invite us to imagine, experiment with, and negotiate possible futures precisely because we do not know what they will look like.

Prior to the performance, as a response, undercurrent with The Present Is Dark turns the gaze towards the darker aspects of the present and the traces of a future that has already begun to unfold. Visual and sound imprints coexist in the space, echoing the now, and with brief instructions invite the audience on a walk through them.
