The play Revolutionary Methods For Cleaning your Swimming Pool by Alexandra K*, who is considered one of the important contemporary playwrights of Greece, was written in 2018 and was staged by the National Theatre of Greece to great success. This play is also the first theatrical production by the Municipal and Regional Theatre of Crete for 2025.
Antonis Such illegal holiday home is threatened by foreign capital and the privatization of public land. Along with it, his entire mentality is also under threat -the mindset of the typical Greek family striving to secure a future for their children.
He fiercely resists the state mechanism that seeks to violate already violated land, which he ultimately declares an "independent state", even turning his own children into hostages in the process. It's a familiar vicious cycle - a reality that leads to the pathological survival of the Greek family and, by extension, of society as a whole.
Two main pillars shape this allegorical and ironic work by Alexandra K*: the older generation, staunch defender of the "holy Greek family", unafraid to literally take up arms to protect its questionable beliefs; and the younger, "spoiled" generation, constantly renouncing petty-bourgeois values at every turn. Two problematic generations and a toxic political system that forces them to live in a state of sick interdependence and mutual support. A generation that deludes itself with ancient Greek grandeur and so-called ancestral values, while at the same time, without hesitation, builds "the future" of its children on rotten foundations. A generation in constant conflict with its offspring, who in turn often disparage everything -usually without reason or understanding- in pursuit of a futile and unattainable dream.
