zdjian Quintet

A Journey to the music of the Eastern Mediterranean!
The internationally renowned Armenian soloist, composer and singer Haig Yazdjian will visit the island of Chios on Saturday the 18th of December, as part of the European Soundroutes programme. This will be the last concert of the project, in which the Chios Music Festival has participated since 2019, creating, along with institutions from Italy, Belgium and Spain, musical dialogues between musicians who have been refugees or immigrants.
Best known for his virtuosity on the oud, Haig Yazdjian, with his own personal sound and expressive immediacy, is considered one of the most important creators of world music in Greece. His compositions stand out for the unique way in which he mixes contemporary sound with disparate elements of the traditional music of the Eastern Mediterranean.
Accompanied by an excellent group of master musicians, he will present, at the Homerion Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Chios, a programme that includes the most famous compositions from his discography, as well as imaginative arrangements of traditional songs from Greece and the Near East.
As it is the case in Haig’s live performances, the improvisation and the creative mood of the musicians set a different tone each time; as a result, each concert is unique with the atmosphere shifting from jazz and fusion to contemporary western music.
He has collaborated with great Greek artists and singers (Nikos Portokaloglou, Nikos Xydakis, George Dalaras, Savina Yannatou, Maria Farantouri, Dimitra Galani, Elli Paspala, Eleftheria Arvanitaki, Eleni Vitali), but also with internationally renowned artists such as the Canadian world/folk singer Loreena MacKennitt, the oud player and composer Ara Dinkjian of the legendary Night Ark, the four-time Grammy Award-winning percussionist Glen Velezo, the ambassador of Oriental music Omar Faruk Tekbilek, etc.
