"Nikos Kazantzakis" Open-air Theatre
"In the footsteps of El Greco" is a music-and-dance journey from Crete to Spain, following the "footsteps" of the great Greek painter Domenikos Theotokópoulos. Guitarist and composer Christos Tzifakis perceives the two countries' contemporary music and dance as a common theme with variations. Having lived in Crete and Spain, he draws from the grand masters of Cretan music and Spanish flamenco to put the musical affinities of the two peoples under the spotlight. He blends elements from the past -Byzantine, Arabic, Greek and Gypsy- with jazz-rock ones, highlighting the rousing Dionysian energy of the Mediterranean's east and west extremes, and the folk wisdom behind the Cretan mantináda and the Spanish letra. He is accompanied on stage by several acclaimed soloists.
