The enigmatic British electronic composer and producer Actress and the legendary American pioneer composer and sound designer Suzanne Ciani meet at the Ioannis Despotopoulos Amphitheatre of the Athens Conservatoire, as part of St Paul's Sessions 8, presenting their new project entitled "Concrète Waves" in quadraphonic sound.

"Concrète Waves" is an unconventional quadraphonic performance, where the industrial introspection of Actress intersects with the analogue, organic expressions of Suzanne Ciani through the Buchla modular system.

Through a continuous field of tension and coexistence, the work explores how the counterpoint of natural and artificial can generate a new sonic vocabulary - a landscape of experimentation, interaction and instinctive rhythmic deconstruction.

The performance unfolds as an electronic dialogue between two radically different but equally unclassifiable musical worldviews, in a spatialized quadraphonic environment specially adapted to the architecture of the venue. At St Paul's Sessions 8 they will present "Concrète Waves" in quadraphonic sound, specially designed for the Ioannis Despotopoulos Amphitheatre, in an electronic dialogue that redefines the boundaries of composition, technology and listening.

Actress (Darren Cunningham)
Darren J. Cunningham (born 23 August 1979 in Wolverhampton), known as Actress, is one of the most innovative figures in British electronic sound. He has been associated with labels such as Ninja Tune, Honest Jon's and Werk Discs (which he founded himself). His music moves between techno, ambient and abstract soul, with albums such as *R.I.P*, *Ghettoville* and the recent *LXXXVIII*. He has collaborated with the London Contemporary Orchestra, while his live shows are regarded as profound explorations of sound as political and bodily experience.

Suzanne Ciani
Born in Indiana and a long-time resident of California, Suzanne Ciani graduated from Wellesley College and holds a master's degree in Music Composition from the University of California, Berkeley. Known as the "first lady of synthesizers," with five Grammy nominations and countless innovations in analogue synthesis, she is a leading ambassador of the Buchla modular system and responsible for reviving quadraphonic sound.

She has performed at major festivals and venues worldwide, and her return to live performance inspired the documentary *A Life in Waves*. She has released over 20 solo albums; in 2018 she recorded *LIVE Quadraphonic* in San Francisco, bringing back her beloved Buchla after 40 years. Since then she has toured internationally with quadraphonic modular synth projects.

Ciani has been honoured with major awards such as the Moog Innovation Award (the first woman to receive it), the Independent Icon Award (A2IM), the Golden Ear Award and the SEAMUS Award. Her work has been featured in films, video games and commercials - from the *Xenon* pinball machine to Coca-Cola's iconic "pop-and-pour" sound.
