Alva Noto, one of the most influential figures in contemporary electronic and experimental music, will be presenting a unique version of HYBR:ID UNI PARA at St Paul's Sessions 8. This rare audiovisual performance will take place at the Ioannis Despotopoulos Amphitheatre of the Athens Conservatoire.

Born in 1965 in Karl-Marx-Stadt (now Chemnitz), Carsten Nicolai - known as Alva Noto - studied architecture before turning to music. Based in Berlin for decades, he has played a defining role in bridging music with art and science, shaping a rigorous minimalist sonic language grounded in mathematical structures, digital precision, and spatial awareness.

As co-founder of the iconic NOTON label in 1994, he helped define a transitional era in which electronic music acquired conceptual and aesthetic depth. His album "20' to 2000", awarded the Golden Nica at Prix Ars Electronica in 2000, remains a landmark work: lasting 20 minutes and 17 seconds, it symbolically reflected the final moments of the millennium as a passage into a new beginning.

Throughout his career, he has collaborated with artists such as Olaf Bender (Byetone), Frank Bretschneider, Ryoji Ikeda, Blixa Bargeld, Thomas Knak, and Michael Nyman. His long-standing creative partnership with Ryuichi Sakamoto culminated in the score for Alejandro González Iñárritu's film The Revenant (2015), which received nominations for a Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Grammy Award.

He has presented sound installations and performances at major international institutions including the Guggenheim Museum (New York), SF MoMA (San Francisco), and Modern Art Oxford, and has participated in significant exhibitions such as documenta.

Since 2015, Nicolai has held a professorship at the Dresden University of Fine Arts, and in 2018 he created the sound design for Iñárritu's groundbreaking VR project "Flesh and Sand."

HYBR:ID UNI PARA

HYBR:ID marks a new series of works unifying heterogeneous compositional methods.

Deep sub-bass frequencies, dilated rhythmic structures, and intricate digital textures merge with strict visual patterns and cinematic narrative. The result is a multilayered audiovisual experience of heightened intensity and refined aesthetic precision, where sound functions as architectural material and space becomes an active element of the composition.

On Saturday March 21st 2026 at the Ioannis Despotopoulos Amphitheatre, HYBR:ID UNI PARA will be presented in a version specially adapted to the venue, as part of St Paul's Sessions 8.
