The Montofoli Festival

22 & 23 June 2012

1st International Festival at the Montofoli Estate

For the first time, this year, in celebration of the World Day of Music, an international music festival is being organised at the Montofoli Estate, situated in the southern end of Evia, Karystos, the land of braziers and quarries, origin of Karystian marble columns. The land where Byzantines, Franks, Lombards, Venetians and Turks all went through. The city which in the early years of modern Greek history was designed by a Bavarian mechanic at King Otto’s request...

The Montofoli Estate is wide open, during the third weekend of June, on the 22nd and 23rd, to welcome 22 musicians from Greece, Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Serbia. The artists will guide the audience from Baroque through to Jazz music in two evenings: Thomas Oltheten and Marion Boshuizen, members of the Apollo Ensemble from the Netherlands, Alexandra Lubchansky, a soprano involved in international productions and performances in great opera houses; the pianist Olivier Roberti, permanent partner of Seiji Ozawa and artistic director of Seiji Ozawa International Academy Switzerland, with string soloists from the Academy; the pianist and artistic director of the festival “around the piano” Alexandra Nomidou; the pianist Apostolos Palios, an artist awarded by the Academy of Athens and appointed as Best Greek Young Artist by the  Association of Greek Critics for Drama and Music; Yiorgos Psihoyios, improvisational pianist and composer, the French saxophonists, graduates of the Conservatoire de Paris (classical and jazz sections) Clément Himbert, 1st prize award at the Bayreuth International Competition, and Sylvain Rifflet, composer awarded with the "best original soundtrack" prize at the Dubai International Film Festival; finally, the renowned Serbian band of Stojan Krstić will open this first International Music Festival of the Montofoli Estate. During both evenings of the festival the programme will begin with young musicians from Karystos, students at the Vasilopoulou Music Conservatory.

Only one hour away from Rafina, located in a hospitable and pleasant environment, among the captivating aroma of the vineyards and the citrus trees, where the wine is made with love, patience and by the traditional process of the Aegean Islands, Karystos becomes once again a cultural crossroad introducing an International Music Festival of a worldwide prestige.

Since 1987, the Estate also functions as a vineyard, ensconced in the Aegean tradition. Four indigenous grape varieties were planted; varieties that are renowned for the exceptional dessert wine they yield. The “Montofoli Estate” is the only dessert wine produced exclusively from grapes cultivated in the estate.

A few words on the Montofoli Estate: located at the Ancient Town of Karystos, in South Evia: this is where, among other sites, is the Byzantine Temple of Saint Marcus. In its atrium courtyard, the concerts of Friday and Saturday 22 and 23 of June 2012 will be held.

Montofoli is open to the public from the 1st of June to the end of September for guided tours and wine tasting, every Saturday at 7pm as well as on other days upon request.
