The Athens Singers Christmas Concert, which will take place at the Parnassos Literary Society on Thursday, December 18, 2014 is dedicated this year to Baroque music. A programme inspired by some of the best loved Choral music of the Baroque era, including a selection of Arias and Choruses from the Messiah, by G. F. Handel, The Christmas Oratorio by J. S. Bach, Christmas music by Charpentier and Vivaldi's Gloria. The orchestra will perform the fabulous Winter from Vivaldi's Four Seasons and there will be carols for all. To round off this evening of brilliant Christmas music and good cheer, please join us for mulled wine and homemade mince pies after the Concert.
With the participation of:
- Michalis Katsoulis, Bass
- Dimitris Vezyroglou, Piano
- Small Orchestral Ensemble
Directed by
Roger Tilley
The Athens Singers was founded in 1967 when a small group of music lovers met and sang together for the sheer pleasure of making music. Over the years, the name Athens Singers has became a byword for musical excellence and endeavor, attracting membership and audiences from both Greek and non-Greek communities. And although members and choral directors have changed over the years, the choir still retains the original energy, ambition and love of choral music of those first meetings. While the direction is in English, the choir sings in a variety of languages and musical styles, ranging from Pre-Baroque to the twentieth century. Earlier this year, now 45 members strong, they performed Vaughan Williams' Dona Nobis Pacem at the Megaron - Athens Concert Hall. The Athens Singers has enjoyed a succession of talented and dedicated musical directors, most notably Carole Johns, who directed the choir from 1990-2004 and our present conductor, Roger Tilley. Roger left England for Athens in 1983, having studied the church organ under Timothy Lees and having held a number of prestigious posts as church organist in the UK. He also conducted the Exultate Singers, in Bath. His first term as Musical Director with the Athens Singers (1984-1989) dates back to their first Christmas concert, which he conducted exactly 30 years ago this year. He took up the baton for a second term in 2007.
