PRESENTATION

September marks the dynamic comeback of musical events at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), with vibrant sounds and rhythms that carry the feel of summer well into the fall.

On Tuesday, September 14, at 21:00, the Panoramic Steps host Vasiliki Karakosta in a unique concert featuring songs from the Mediterranean Sea's ten largest islands, under the telling title "A vast, near-landlocked sea." The beloved performer is putting on a musical show specially created for the Mediterranean Festival of the Municipality of Kallithea, focusing on the bigger islands of a sea that throbs and pulsates amidst three continents. Melodies and lyrics from local traditions, rhythms that feel grounded at times, and at other times appear to be suspended from the skies, are masterfully channeled towards us through the voice of Vasiliki Karakosta and the virtuosity of the musicians of her band.

Vasiliki Karakosta was born in Glyfa of Fthiotida. Among her earliest musical memories are the Byzantine vespers she used to chant together with her grandfather. Then came the second voice she sang to the fishermen and their fishnets of the islands, along popular or folk music scales and modes. In the Plain of Thessaly, she crossed paths with the demotic song, while as a teenager in the city of Volos she came into contact with the academic aspect of music. Shortly afterwards, she received a scholarship to study at the Municipal Conservatoire of Nea Ionia, Volos, and gave her first concerts with the renowned Estudiantina Orchestra of Nea Ionia, also discovering the genre of rebetiko along the way. For the past twenty years she has been living and working in Athens.

The Mediterranean Festival of the Municipality of Kallithea is staged at the SNFCC for the third year in a row, and its 2021 instalment focuses on the islands of the Mediterranean Sea as well as on the bicentennial of the 1821 Greek War of Independence. Once again, the festival presents a wide array of events, including theatrical plays, concerts, dance performances, oratorios and operettas, gastronomic experiences, and book presentations. The festival's Artistic Director is renowned mezzo-soprano Marita Paparizou.
