Internationally acclaimed contemporary jazz vocalist José James returns to Athens three years after his highly successful performance at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus for a major concert at the Lycabettus Municipal Theater on Monday, July 6.
This special event is a tribute to the 50th anniversary of I Want You—a timeless masterpiece and one of the most sensual and groundbreaking albums in music history. Originally created by the legendary Leon Ware for Motown Records, the album stands as a milestone in jazz-infused R&B, influencing generations of artists from Prince and D’Angelo to Mary J. Blige, Sade, and Kendrick Lamar.
José James, who collaborated with Leon Ware on his own album No Beginning No End for Blue Note Records, has often spoken of Marvin Gaye as a profound source of inspiration:
“Marvin Gaye is one of my heroes. He had the courage to transform not only his music but the world around him. Through his creativity, he inspired us to seek the deeper meaning of love and fearlessly follow our spiritual calling.”
Reflecting on his connection with Leon Ware, James adds:

This project is my way of giving back to both Marvin and Leon, honoring their legacy and the love they shared with the world.”
To bring I Want You to life on stage, José James will be joined by the incomparable China Moses and a world-class band featuring guitarist Marcus Machado, bassist David Ginyard, and drummer Jharis Yokley. This intimate five-piece ensemble promises a profoundly intimate and one-of-a-kind performance.
This distinctive, atmospheric concert at the Lycabettus amphitheater—just a few steps from the audience—will open with a full rendition of I Want You. The evening will then continue with selections from the artists’ own work, showcasing Marvin Gaye’s enduring influence on their music.
