The Greek National Opera Intercultural Orchestra, an extraordinary musical ensemble with members from Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Syria, France, Portugal and Iraq, returns to live performances with a great concert that will be held at the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus, on Monday 8 November 2021, at 20.30.

In this new concert the Intercultural Orchestra will present a rich programme of songs and instrumental compositions from the wider Mediterranean Region, pieces that were jointly proposed and selected by its members, as well as pieces composed by the members of the Orchestra themselves. Admission is free upon priority vouchers that will be distributed from Friday 5 November, at 12.00, exclusively via ticket services .

" The GNO International Orchestra aims at embracing people and music styles, languages and melodies from different parts of the world. Through music - perceived as a global practice that unites instead of diving people, converses instead of being forced on them - the ensemble attempts to open up new perspectives, give hope, and most of all integrate, accept and bring out that which is different.

It is the first time the Intercultural Orchestra appears live on stage after the pandemic outbreak, and the concert will be given at the Municipal Theatre of Piraeus on 8 November. This time, apart from the music of the countries of origin of its members, the Intercultural Orchestra takes one step further by also presenting original pieces composed by its own members. Thus it serves as a space of free expression and as a workshop of experimentation and creativity ", notes the conductor of the Intercultural Orchestra Harris Lambrakis.

A few words about the Intercultural Orchestra

In October 2019 a special journey into the world of music began, as the Alternative Stage in collaboration with the GNO Learning and Participation Department introduced a new ensemble, the Intercultural Orchestra. Right now the Intercultural Orchestra consists of more than 20 musicians, who are permanent or temporary residents of Athens, professionals or amateurs, from Greece, Turkey, Syria, Cyprus, France and Portugal.

Based on the concept that music can serve as a common ground, the Orchestra works as a hub where its members can meet and interact as equals, as a platform of communication for different views and cultures. It puts forward respect and acceptance, the kind of collaboration that springs from the need for deeper communication, but also original musical creation free from stereotypes, dogmatism and rigidity.

The Intercultural Orchestra has given concerts in the courtyard of the Byzantine and Christian Museum, the Syntagma Metro station, and on the GNO Alternative Stage at the SNFCC, featuring the virtuoso oud player and composer Haig Yazdjian as well as the skilled musician and composer Ross Daly as special guests.
