Cosmos: Christmas concert with the National Symphony Orchestra of ERT

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) rings in the festive season with a dazzling concert of the Cosmos series, featuring the National Symphony Orchestra of ERT conducted by award-winning Maestro Kornilios Michailidis.

The program includes three masterpieces of the symphonic repertoire: Festive Overture, Op. 96 by Dmitri Shostakovich, with the spectacular fanfares and glittering orchestration that render the work an ideal opening to a Christmas concert; Suites 1 & 2 of Peer Gynt by Edvard Grieg, two of the most iconic works of Scandinavian Romanticism; and The Nutcracker by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, one of the most enchanting compositions of classical music that never fails to revive the Christmas fantasy and joy of childhood dreams.

Through these works, the SNFCC and the National Symphony Orchestra of ERT invite you to a musical journey where dream, imagination and light meet the joy of the holiday season.

National Symphony Orchestra of ERT
The National Symphony Orchestra of ERT was founded in 1937 and is one of the leading symphonic ensembles in Greece, boasting a rich performance history in the Greek and international classical repertoires. It has collaborated with distinguished conductors and soloists of international fame, including Dimitri Mitropoulos, Yehudi Menuhin, Gina Bachauer, José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, and Angela Gheorghiu. The Orchestra has performed in prominent venues and festivals in Greece and abroad-from the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the Athens Concert Hall to the United Nations General Assembly in New York and the Beijing Poly Theater-and is considered one of the most active top-tier musical ensembles in Greece.

Kornilios Michailidis
Kornilios Michailidis is one of the leading conductors of his generation, with an international presence in both the symphonic and the operatic repertoire. He was awarded 1st Prize and the Orchestra's Award at the Tokyo International Conducting Competition (2024), and has served as Conductor in Residence of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. He has worked with major ensembles, including the NHK Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Russian National Orchestra, Sinfonia Lahti, the South Denmark Philharmonic, and the State Orchestras of Athens and Thessaloniki. Recently, his recording with Staatskapelle Weimar on Berlin Classics, featuring works by Mikis Theodorakis, received rave reviews. A graduate of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, with a Master's degree in Orchestral Conducting, he has also been distinguished as a pianist and is the artistic director of the Koufonisia Classical Music Festival.
