AN EVENING OF DUET MASTERPIECES

JANUARY 13, 2014 8:30 pm

"PARNASSOS" CONCERT HALL
Athens

On January 13, 2014, at 8:30 p.m., duo artists REGI PAPA and BENJAMIN CAPPS will offer a program of music for violin and cello duet at PARNASSOS CONCERT HALL in Athens. The program will include duo works by Mozart, Martinu, Tcherepnin, Sousa/Dukov, and Maurice Ravel. PAPA and CAPPS met as undergraduate music students in New York City ten years ago. Close friends ever since, they regularly appear together in concert in both the United States and Europe.

Hailed as "an exciting young violinist with brilliant technique" (Strad Magazine), violinist REGI ALEXANDROS PAPA made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2006 with the New York Senior Concert Orchestra in a performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto, and has been a featured soloist with the New York Symphonic Arts Ensemble, the Manhattan School of Music Philharmonia, the Soloists of Patras Orchestra, the Volos Symphony Orchestra, the Athens Camerata, the Greek National Radio Orchestra, the Greek National State Orchestra and Feminarte Orchestra of Albania. He is the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships including the 2002 Eurovision Contest (Greece), the Wieniawski, International "Jeunesses Musicales", and Waldo Mayo competitions. Raised in Athens in a family of musicians, he received scholarships from the Onassis and George and Marie Vergottis Foundations to study in New York at Manhattan School of Music (B.Mus. ’08) and Juilliard (M.Mus. ’10), and is currently in the Doctoral Program at SUNY Stony Brook.

A "young cello phenomenon from New York" with "dazzling technique and a fearsomely meaty tone" (Holland Times), "most appealing" (New York Times), and "cello playing of the very highest standard" (Epoch Times) is how critics describe the playing of exciting young cellist BENJAMIN CAPPS. A frequent performer at such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and the Athens Megaro, he was appointed principal cellist of Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas at age 21, and has appeared as soloist with Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas, the New York Concerti Sinfonietta, the Juilliard Pre-College Symphony, Manhattan School of Music Composer’s Orchestra, Danbury Symphony and the Manchester Chamber Orchestra. An ardent performer of new music, Capps can be heard on the Innova and Tzadik labels in the premiere recordings of contemporary cello works. A native of New York City of Greek ancestral background, he studied at Manhattan School of Music (B.Mus.’08) and Juilliard (M.Mus.’10) where he was the recipient of the Francis Goelet and Irving Mulde Scholarships. Now a student of Laurence Lesser in the Graduate Diploma program at New England Conservatory where he receives the Piatigorsky Scholarship, his principal teachers include David Soyer of the Guarneri Quartet and modern cello guru Fred Sherry. www.bencapps.com.

REGI PAPA and BENJAMIN CAPPS, with pianist KONSTANTINE VALIANATOS, are founding members of the OLYMPUS PIANO TRIO. Heralded as "astounding... unbelievable magnitude of talent and maturity... unique in every sense" (Athens Estia-January 2013). The OLYMPUS PIANO TRIO performed in Greece during the 2013-2014 season at the Athens Megaro, the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki, and the Kefallonia Music Festival.
