GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE CAVES OF DIROS

The Vlychada Cave in Diros, at the Mani peninsula, is one of the most important and beautiful lake-caves in the world!

Visitors explore the cave with special boats which follow a peripheral route, so that anyone can admire the succession of the "Chambers" which still bear the names given by the speleologists who explored the cave in the past. The names are based on the shapes of the stalactite and stalagmite formations and on the natural colours found there. After the peripheral lake-route, the visitors disembark to the second section of the cave, which is extended on dry land.

Among the most interesting parts of the lake are the specific sites where animal fossils were found. You can't imagine which animal fossils have been discovered in the cave! An extraordinary discover in Greece! In fact, this is the furthest south site in Europe where this specific animal has been found!

This is one of the most prominent establishment of Caves in the world, having a unique appeal, as hundreds of thousands of tourists pay a visit to Diros every year.
