Μία οικογένεια Σουηδών πηγαίνει στις γαλλικές Άλπεις για σκι, όμως το ειδυλλιακό σκηνικό των διακοπών τους ανατρέπεται βίαια εξαιτίας μιας χιονοστιβάδας, κατά τη διάρκεια της οποίας η Έμπα ζητά τη βοήθεια του Τόμας καθώς προσπαθεί να προστατεύσει τα παιδιά τους, όμως εκείνος τρέχει για να σωθεί ο ίδιος. Η οικογενειακή ισορροπία έχει διαταραχθεί πλήρως. Η αναπάντεχη αντίδραση του Τόμας προκαλεί την επαναξιολόγηση των ρόλων και του οικογενειακού κατεστημένου. Ο γάμος του ζευγαριού κρέμεται από μια κλωστή, καθώς ο Τόμας προσπαθεί να επανακτήσει τον ρόλο του αρχηγού της οικογένειας.
