Στο Ισραήλ δεν αναγνωρίζεται ο πολιτικός γάμος, πόσω μάλλον το διαζύγιο. Μόνο οι ραβίνοι νομιμοποιούν έναν γάμο και, αν χρειαστεί, τη διάλυση του. Όμως στην τελευταία περίπτωση χρειάζεται η συναίνεση του συζύγου, ο οποίος έχει μεγαλύτερη εξουσία ακόμη και από τους δικαστές. Η Βίβιαν Αμσαλέμ κάνει αιτήσεις διαζυγίου επί τρία ολόκληρα χρόνια, όμως ο σύζυγος της, Ελίσα, δεν συμφωνεί με αυτό.
