STAVROS NIARCHOS FOUNDATION CULTURAL CENTER - STAVROS NIARCHOS HALL

PRESENTATION

The award winning saxophonist and composer who is changing the landscape of British jazz scene - a traditionally male-dominated scene - is coming to the WOW Athens festival and the Stavros Niarchos Hall on Monday, April 3 at 21.00.

When she started learning the saxophone at the age of 10, Nubya Garcia, a native of Camden tracing her roots in Guyana and Trinidad, could not have imagine that her career would skyrocket on the same year that an unforeseen pandemic would freeze the planet; and all this before she even turned 30. Training alongside jazz legends, such as Nikki Yeoh and Gary Crosby, and studying at leading music schools, including the Royal Academy of Music and Berklee College of Music, Nubya Garcia released her first album, SOURCE, to great critical acclaim, and found herself winning successive distinctions and awards, and being nominated for a Mercury Prize.

With the support of Gilles Peterson and Jazz FM during her early steps, the young saxophonist saw her reputation soar well beyond the borders of England after the release of SOURCE in summer 2020, herself being featured on television and at Tiny Desk (Home) Concerts, Khruangbin choosing her to be their opening act during their US tour, and compositions of hers being used in popular series such as Ted Lasso and Atlanta.

The "child" of John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Mary Lou Williams, Nubya Garcia is the hot name in every international festival lineup, and her appearances regularly earn her 5-star reviews.

In March 2021, she presented her album, SOURCE, in a special online performance as part of WOW London 2021 in the iconic Royal Albert Hall.
